Run Mistral 7B locally
Mistral 7B is one of the most quietly excellent local LLMs out there. Small enough to run on almost anything, trained on a different data mix from Llama, and often a better fit for European languages. A classic 'just works' model.
$ hivebear run mistral-7b-instructHiveBear will profile your hardware, pick the right quantization for your pool, and fall back to the hive if your machine can't carry it alone.
Hardware: running it alone
Runs comfortably on any laptop with 8+ GB of RAM. Raspberry Pi 5 territory.
Quantized to Q4_K_M it's ~4 GB on disk and happy with ~6 GB active memory.
Hardware: running it on the hive
Mistral 7B doesn't need the hive — it fits almost anywhere alone. The hive can help if you want to share one model across several people without each of them downloading it.
If you're starting out with local AI, Llama 3 8B and Mistral 7B are both great 'first model' picks. Try both and see which you prefer.
Things to know
Real gotchas from the hive. No sales pitch.
- →The original Mistral 7B and Mistral 7B Instruct v0.2/v0.3 are different — pick an Instruct variant for chat use.
- →Context window is 32K on newer Instruct variants, but older versions are 8K. Check the version if long documents matter.
What Mistral 7B is great at
Starter local LLM, European languages, small-hardware environments. A great daily driver for lightweight chat and coding help.
If this isn't the one, try these instead
- →Llama 3 8B — similar size, different training data.
- →Mixtral 8x7B — bigger sibling, much more capable, needs more memory.
- →Phi-3 Mini — even smaller, surprisingly strong for its size.
