Both are tools for running local AI models. Both are free. Both keep your data on your hardware. Here's where they diverge — and the real moments when Ollama is the better call.

First, Ollama is great.

We genuinely love Ollama. It's the reason a lot of us got into running local AI in the first place — one install, `ollama run llama3`, and you're chatting with a model on your own machine. If your hardware can already handle the model you want, honestly, Ollama is wonderful and you should go use it.

How the hive is different

The difference shows up when one machine isn't enough. Ollama runs a local LLM on a single computer, so you're capped at whatever that computer can handle alone. When Ollama is the better pick

  • →Your machine is already powerful enough for the model you want to run. One-machine local AI is Ollama's sweet spot, and its install and model-library UX is unbeatable.
  • →You want zero network chatter. Ollama is 100% on-device with no mesh component. If the model fits, nothing ever leaves your laptop.
  • →You want the absolute simplest way to try local LLMs for the first time. `ollama run llama3` is genuinely two commands to a working chat.
  • →You're using a tool or framework that has a first-class Ollama integration. HiveBear's OpenAI-compatible API covers most cases, but if there's already a one-click Ollama preset, that's frictionless.

Seriously. If your situation matches any of these, go use Ollama and enjoy it.

When the hive is the better pick

  • →You want to run models that are too big for your machine alone — Llama 3 70B on a 16 GB laptop, Mixtral on a mini PC, a 120B research model on a couple of workstations.
  • →You and a few friends or coworkers want to share compute. The hive makes that a built-in feature instead of a side project.
  • →You've got mismatched hardware lying around (a gaming PC, an old Mac, a Raspberry Pi) and want to pool all of it into one bigger brain.
  • →You want to share a live model with someone as a link they can chat with in a browser — without asking them to install anything.

Either way, you're running AI on your own terms.
